Is CBD the Same as THC?
The short answer is: no.
CBD, or cannabidiol, and THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, are both active ingredients in cannabis and, although occasionally combined medicinally and recreationally, they produce different effects when isolated.
For example, CBD is proving itself to be effective for medicinal uses such as chronic pain relief, especially when combined with THC. However, CBD alone does not produce the same “high” effect as isolated THC or combinations of CBD and THC.
Is CBD the Same as Hemp?
Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant that has been cultivated by humans for thousands of years. It has been made into textiles, paper, rope, and other products for millenia. In fact, some of the earliest evidence of hemp usage includes a piece of cloth wrapped around a baby’s skeleton in a burned Neolithic house.
While CBD and hemp are not the same, a majority of the CBD products available in the United States come from industrial hemp due to requirements set out by the 2018 Farm Bill. Industrial hemp is defined as containing less than 0.3% THC; anything with a greater concentration is considered to be marijanna, and technically illegal under federal law.
So, while hemp is an amazing source of both CBD and industrial products, it cannot get you “high” due to its low concentration of THC.
Is CBD the Same as Hemp Seed Oil?
While there is some confusion regarding what makes CBD oil and hemp seed oil different, they are two distinct products. Hemp seed oil is typically cold-pressed from the seeds of the industrial hemp plant, whereas CBD oil is extracted from the hemp plant using a solvent, then mixed with a carrier oil.
Adding to this confusion is the fact that hemp seed oil is a common carrier for oil-based CBD products.
Even with the differences between these two products, hemp seed oil is still beneficial for human consumption, though its benefits come from a high concentration of three polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as from its omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio.
How Do I Choose the Right Product for Me?
Choosing the correct product largely depends on your health goals.
If you’re looking to manage a condition such as chronic pain, THC may be a viable solution to consider if it’s legal in your location. However, if you’re not looking to experience any sort of “high,” or if products with a higher concentration than 0.3% of THC are illegal in your area, an isolated CBD product could be a good choice.
The key to selecting the right product, though, is to know exactly what you’re buying, and why you’re purchasing it. Because THC, CBD, and hemp seed oil all impact our endocannabinoid system in different ways, they each serve a different yet oftentimes complimentary purpose in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
